What is Heart to Handle?

Heart to Handle is a foundation established by Daphne Koolen in 2013. She lost her father early in life due to cardiovascular disease. She decided to do something incredible: Cycling from Groningen to Barcelona to raise money for the ‘Hartstichting’. In the summer of 2014 it all began, together with four friends they started this great adventure and managed to make it a huge success. Her cycling trip to Barcelona raised a total of 22.525,27 euros!

Unfortunately, Daphne’s father is no exception and in the Netherlands alone, an average of 105 people pass away daily due to the consequences of cardiovascular disease. Every year a group of students, in name of Heart to Handle, take on this physical challenge to raise as much money as possible for research closely related to cardiovascular disease to ultimately reduce the number of deaths.

Meanwhile, five years have past and Heart to Handle is celebrating its fifth anniversary. Heart to Handle has become a phenomenon in the Dutch student society, especially in Delft and Groningen.

This summer, we are taking on the challenge and together with eight students from the TU Delft we will cycle 3000 km to Sofia, Bulgaria, to raise money for the development of a chatbot. This chatbot is an interactive application to prevent and early identify symptoms related to cardiovascular disease.

Most of us have never before tried out road bicycle racing and are still rather inexperienced with it. Essentially, we are taking on a huge challenge and we look forward to our big adventure for which we will have to train very hard in order to reach our final destination Sofia in august!
